Kustannus-Mäkelä Oy

Mäkelä Publishing, founded in 1971, is a family business located in Karkkila, Finland. We are primarily known for our high-quality children’s and juvenile books, pragmatic crafts and hobbies books, and Finnish detective stories.

In our selection, there is a special place for children’s books: from picture books to longer stories and children’s non-fiction.

In addition to amusement and humour, we offer themed stories about diversity, friendship, the importance of caring for one another, and overcoming one’s fears. All these topics are important in children’s lives. Some of the worldwide favourite characters in Mäkelä’s books are Mamma Moo & Crow (Mamma Mu och Kråkan; Mimmi Lehmä ja Varis in Finnish), Where’s Wally? (Vallu), Elmer the Patchwork Elephant (Elmeri), and Max Velthuijs’s Frog (Sammakko). We also nurture new reader generations by publishing easy-to-read books with humorous stories, abundant illustration, and amusing speech bubble texts. These books inspire children to read by themselves.

New recipes, baking ideas, beautiful knitting patterns, tips on doing crafts, etc. All this and much more is provided for those who enjoy hands-on activities. Our detective stories offer excitement for crime fiction fans.

Mäkelä publishes over 100 novelty books annually. Our books are available in well-equipped bookstores, department stores, supermarkets, and online stores.
